The Better Business Bureau – Harming Businesses?

Many consumers falsely believe that the BBB (Better Business Bureau) is some sort of governmental entity entrusted with the duty of consumer protection. It is not. It is a corporation with highly paid executives and an overly aggressive team of telemarketers, hitting up business owners to pay an annual fee to be listed with the BBB.

Many business owners, some famous (like Wolfgang Puck), have suffered in its “BBB grade” due to non-payment. In addition, my law office had a client that went from an A rating to an F at about the time where he could no longer afford to continue paying the BBB’s fee.

Legal eagle for 2010

The OC Metro magazine (August 2010) has named attorney Brian Pedigo a “legal eagle” for 2010. OC Metro used metrics from Avvo, a national organization that rates attorneys based on a mathematical model that evaluates years in practice, disciplinary history, professional achievements and industry recognition. OC Metro then listed the top five attorneys in 19 specialties, including Brian as “a true leaders in [his] profession.”
